Things that fly

Finally, a day on which nothing was scheduled.  Having changed the drivetrain on my bike last month, I was itching to go for a ride.  Destination: YVR.

Things that fly

Things that hover

Things that can fly (cormorants and mallards), resting on a thing that floats

Things that can fly, but opt to taxi or walk

Things that can fly, but opt to stand watch as a scarecrow
Things that can fly, but opt to sing (a tree-ful of redwing blackbirds, if the zoom on another still-photo I took is accurate)

They all could've flown...but at 6 degrees, it's conservationally better to just sit.

Coyote beautiful

What a great start to the new year. It's rare that we can claim to have had 0 mm of precipitation this year.

To walk off our New Years sleep-in, we walked out to the western part of the dyke in Richmond, when I saw some movement:

What's that in the foreground, admiring the view?

Coyote, hunting among the debris

Later on, we saw a second coyote, with a curious hawk looking for scraps

Lasqueti and Texeda Islands, hovering in the sky

One of the pump stations at the dyke, working hard to push water out to what seemed to be an alarming level on the seaward side.  I suspected the water was freezing and not flowing out to the ocean.
